Bob Stains Hits the Airwaves
"People can absolutely not imagine having a conversation with someone that they really, really differ with. And there's so much surprise that they can make a connection with someone that they really differ with."
Public Conversations Project senior practitioner Bob Stains explores the possibilities when those connections are made, joining the Texas Conflict Coach Pattie Porter for a conversation about questions of sexual orientation within communities of faith. Their conversation focused on the question: what happens when deep differences in theology, politics or identity turn into divisions in communities of faith? What initiates and fuels division? What conversations can build connection and care in the midst of profound differences?
Bob and Pattie discuss rebuilding relationships by enhancing conversation with lessons and tips from the Reflective Structured Dialogue approach of the Public Conversations Project. Bob answers questions about what happens when our identities feel threatened, and shares insights from his experience about how to have more constructive conversations that get to the heart of the matter.
